Weekend Recap

This weekend we were up to all kinds of fun! Saturday night we met the fam (Nana and Papa B, Uncle Chase, Aunt Jan, Uncle Willie, and cousins Wendy, Kaitlynn, Brian, Joanna, Treylin & Kelci) at Hill's Cafe, an Austin landmark restaurant. My first diet slip-up in 3 weeks. The good news, the fat had yet to find itself to my thighs overnight, as I had my 3 week weigh-in this morning and I officially hit the 5 lb. lost mark! 25% to goal, 15 more lbs.

This morning, we wanted to take the kids to do something fun, so we took a 45 minute drive to Cedar Creek to the Central Texas Zoo. It is not a typical zoo, but a sanctuary/rescue zoo and also used for breeding endangered species. Really neat! There was a pony that just roamed around and the kids got a kick out of her. The goats were another big hit, especially the baby goat. Afterwards, we took a short detour to Bastrop to eat lunch and cruise through Tahitian Village, the subdivision that suffered the most from the Bastrop fires last September. I just had this sickening pit in my stomach, looking at all the empty slabs where people's homes and lives once existed. It made me realize that home isn't always and shouldn't always be a "structure." It truly is where your family is. Where the heart is.

All in all, we are enjoying our lazy weekends before soccer starts in March. Can't wait!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy heart day from our family to yours! We had a wonderful day (full of many sugar highs and several more crashes toward bedtime). Yesterday, Chris delivered a dozen red roses to me at work, where they are still sitting on my windowsill. They are gorgeous and I wasn't sure if I liked the roses or his card better!

At school, the kids had their Valentine's parties and came home with a MILLION Valentines and 2 ziploc gallon bags full of candy. The highlight of my entire day was getting our special gifts they made for Chris and I. Chris cooked salmon and wild rice for dinner and Nana and Papa came over for a short visit after dinner. We played with mermaids, did a ladybug puzzle, Jax played with his new puppy dog and horse, and well, we had a wonderful evening. After we got home from school, Chris had created a scavenger hunt for Mackenzie going all over the house in order to find her Valentine's Day goodies from Daddy and Mommy. Fun! Again, not sure who had more fun, but well, that's beside the point!

Valentine's Day Tea Party

Today Pottery Barn Kids hosted a free tea party for little girls. I wanted to make a girls day of it, so I invited both Nanas to meet for lunch and then go to the tea party with us. Mackenzie and I started the day with a nail appointment, and as you can see, Mackenzie was NOT choosing a nail polish that would match her beautiful tea party dress. She was having NONE of that. She wanted a rainbow theme, each nail a different color. Well, it was her special day, so rainbow it was. We had a yummy lunch and then off to the tea party. Mackenzie took her doll Molly with her to tea. Molly used to be my doll growing up, so that was super sweet. They had tea (apple juice) and a cookie, read a book and did a craft. We had fun and I know we all enjoyed our girl time together. Thanks for going with us and making the day that much more special Nana B and Nana P!

The other night we had some good old fashioned roll around on the floor fun! I have a hilarious video of Mackenzie teaching Jax how to break dance (it's too large so I can't share here). Now, that kid LOVES to dance. We laugh all the time and tell him, "come on Bubba, get it, catch that groove!" If there is music, he will dance. Always. I took some of these pics just horsing around, the one where "she devil" is all blurry in another dimension was just super weird but cool looking. Mackenzie took the one of Jax and I, and the one of my nightstand.... here's the story. Mackenzie went out to the yard, picked some pretty little purple flowers, found my crystal heart jewelry holder, added a bit of water, then put the flowers in the water and surprised me with this mini bouquet on my nightstand. How sweet is that?! I love how simple and sweet a child's mind is. How she can wrap up "presents" for me in toilet paper and be SO PROUD to give it to me. My last "present" was some used lip gloss. I love it.

Saturday I took Mackenzie to an indoor bounce house while Daddy stayed home with Jax. While we were there, Mackenzie got her face painted. I loved this lady and she even does BD parties. Hmmmm....

Water For Elephants

Blah. Hollywood did it again. Trying to take a masterful novel and make it into a movie. My favorite books always seem to have a common thread, they are ALWAYS better than the movies. They are the original masterpiece, the creation itself. When Hollywood attempts to recreate a story line, so much gets lost in the beauty of the story. Water For Elephants was no exception. It's the DETAILS that make a book or experince so memorable in my opinion. The movie failed to capture so many of those details and there was a lot of difference between the two and how the story unfolded. I did right by reading the book first. I can totally get how someone could love the movie, never having read the book, but not sure I could see it the other way around. Don't get me wrong, the movie was good by itself, but bumped down to just "ok" having read the book before watching it. I finished the book early last week and watched the movie last night. I was disappointed, but then, I should have known better. Mendy's book and movie review all rolled into one, there you go!

All I can say is, Lord help me! I gave Mackenzie a warning last night that I did not like her disrespectful attitude and complaining she so gloriously displayed in public. I told her I was going to "pop her" next time, fair warning. Before some of you get bent out of shape, a "pop" is not a spanking. It is just a that, a pop on the hiney. I am not however against spanking, I've just never had to really do it to Mackenzie. She turned around and said, "you're gonna pop me in front of all these people?" I said, "I sure will." Then she said, "well, if you pop me, I'm gonna call 119!" She meant 911. I had to bury my face in my hands and feign a coughing fit.

UPDATED: Today while eating lunch, Mackenzie looks at me and says, "girl, you are tearing that up!"

My Fitness Pal

I discovered an app for my Kindle Fire- "My Fitness Pal." Have you ever heard of it? Am I late to this game? I started using this app on Sunday and am back on my workout routine. Chris and I signed up for an annual membership at our local Rec Center..... I'm bacccccckkkkk! For me, motivation has been a huge factor in dropping these last 20 lbs. I finally just got tired of it and said enough is enough. I have ZERO excuses. I am sure some of my immediate weight loss is due to water loss/retention, but I have lost 3 lbs. already. My Fitness Pal is a calorie counting app. Is has a database of over a million foods and the app even has a built in bar code scanner that scans your food and can automatically count calories for you. I chose a 1200 calorie per day diet. You can add friends and at the end of each day, it posts whether or not you were under your calorie goal. No personal info. After your weekly weigh-in, it will also report how much weight you have lost or if you’ve maintained. I like the accountability! At the end of each day, it even predicts how much you will weigh in 5 weeks based on that day's caloric intake and exercise. I am currently predicted to lose around 2 lbs. per week. Fingers crossed...

The idea is similar to Weight Watchers, it just forces you to make healthier choices and be aware of every single thing that goes in your mouth. WW counted carbs and fats and I was just not successful on their new program, although I did well on their old program. However, this app counts calories only. I guess the idea is, the fewer calories, the fewer fat, carbs, etc.

Anyway, the app is very handy and FREE, so I wanted to share it with you. It has cost me nothing to lose 3 lbs. and I feel great. In an almost demented way, I must admit, it felt good to get back in the gym. It blows me away how quickly I can consume 300 calories (5 minutes), and how long it takes to work 300 calories off (30 mins). If you have this app, tell me what you think!

Movies

Chris and I were blessed with an unexpected night without the kids Monday night. So, we made the most of it together and went to see "The Grey." Great movie, but terrifying! We weren't disappointed. Thanks to On Demand (versus RedBox), we were able to capitalize on our laziness and rent 2 movies at home. Great movies and worth the watch. Change-Up was hilarious!

I carry my camera in my purse so that I am always ready should the perfect photo opportunity arise. I've learned with two small children that there is no such thing as "too prepared." Here is what I found!

Our 5 year old breast pump that has nourished and helped provide sustenance for 4 babies has now made its merry way on to the next family. My sister and I have passed it on to each other for each of our kids. I will never forget the day I purchased it with Mom. I even got a special note from it the other day. Ah, another sad goodbye from the baby years. SIGH.

A very special gift from Mackenzie. A homemade candle she made during Christmas that she decided to re-wrap for me and give to me as a gift. So precious.

The Time In Between

Another book I thought was just literary genius. Often times (most times), books that are translated into english lose the magic of their language of origin. This book is an international bestseller, published in 2009 in Spain and translated/pulished in english in 2011. I cannot imagine this book being more eloquently written. The language and flow of events made me feel like I was actually there. A little bit of nostalgia for a time I will never get to experience, so close, yet so far away. Another 5 star read!

Mommy's cure for the common cold (and an ear infection to boot)

When Mommy throws the towel in, admits she's sick and then drives herself to the Dr., you know I must be near death. Well, not really (but almost). I got a cold last week, then in the past 24 hours, my symptoms completely changed. Since 90% of all of my colds head south to become an upper repsiratory infection, I can usually tell when it comes time to holler "mercy." Last night I developed an excruciating ear infection, so I went to the Dr. this morning. Sure enough, I have a raging ear infection, secondary to my cold. So, Z-Pac it is. I find this picture amusing, especially considering the Z-Pac and Ibuprofen is missing. This is my cure all. As for the Starbucks, it can cure almost anything for me! Hopefully it all starts working soon.

In case your wondering, chicken broth with fresh jalapenos is a special recipe from a good friend. If you are congested and need to open your sinuses, this folks will do the trick. Trust me, it is cheaper than any medication you can buy. I just sipped my first bowl. Not that anyone would ever considering do this, but just because those little jalapeno slices look so pretty, green and harmless, do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT just scoop one out and actually eat it. If you do, you will probably be sorry. The heat alone of the jalapeno "floaters" will do the trick just fine.

1 can of chicken broth (organic, fat free, msg free and low sodium)
1 large jalapeno, freshly sliced (do not remove the seeds)
Heat broth alone for 1.5 minutes in microwave, add the fresh sliced jalapenos, heat another minute. Voila!

Mommy's Kindle Fire

Oh my goodness! Look at this! My Kindle Fire is being delivered today!!! And it is all mine. I might share, but probably won't. It's on it's way, I am sooooo excited! This was my BD gift from my parents. I wish I could get off work early today, but tomorrow is a holiday for us (Confederate Heroes Day), so besides my 2011 tax return, you know what I'll be doing tomorrow! In preparation, I already created my "wish list" in the Amazon Kindle store, with about half a dozen free books I can't wait to download! YEE-HAW!

I am on a reading binge these days (don't ask me where I find the time, I am not sure), and am literally discovering some of the best books of my life! Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a non-fiction book about Louie Zamperini, Olympian, a Survivor for 47 days on a life raft in the South Pacific and a POW at 4 different Japanese POW camps from 1943-1945. It is not just another war story, but an amazing journey into the history of WWII in the South Pacific, survival, dignity, resilience, redemption and forgiveness. The atrocities of war and Louie's account had a profound effect on me. As I read, I often times gasped out loud, got angry and sometimes sobbed. It made me think of my Grandpa. I come from a family rich in miltary experience; both of my Grandfathers fought in WWII, my Great Uncle Charlie was a POW in Germany during WWII and my Great Uncle Don fought for the Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. My Dad was in the Army Reserves and trained for Vietnam. My Father-in-law is a Marine. My maternal Grandfather was especially affected by the war and although his body returned from war, his soul did not. The enemy would eventually win over my Grandpa. He served in several oversees campaigns/theaters in Europe, his last station as an Army medic in the boot of Italy. After his return, he would fight alcoholism and the awful demons that accompanied PTSD, what was previously referred to as "shellshock." Papa lost his battle with cancer of the esophogus and cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 58 years old when I was only 6 months old.

If asked who I look forward to meeting most once I get to Heaven, other than my Lord and Savior, at this time (I know this will likely change as the years march on) my Papa is on the top of my list. All 4 of my Grandparents are, but my Papa is at the top. He is the only one I don't remember meeting. I have learned of his bravery through his miltary records and family albums, and in later years, my Grandma's stories. Upon seeing me for the first time after I was born, he gave me the name "Tinkerbell." I have struggled somewhat in adulthood in understanding my Grandfather, the person he was before the war, and who he returned as. Reading this book helped me realize that while we all go through trials and tribulations and are forever changed by certain events and see things differently from said point forward, there is NOTHING that makes war OK. Nothing that truly ever makes the memories, horror, atrocities and killing go away. They will ALWAYS be there. Just as out experiences shape who we are and will always be a part of us. Louie's story gave me insight into what my Papa experienced in WWII, and was sort of an "AHA!" moment for me. I not only learned a lot of history and the timeline of events for WWII, but I learned about the human condition. I learned how much I truly love and admire my Grandpa. My son is honored to carry both of his Grandfathers' names as his middle name. Jaxson Bentlee, you are destined for greatness my Son!

Beauty and the Beast in 3D

Disney is starting to make a run on their "classics," showing them in 3D in movie theaters. I picked Mackenzie up and surprised her Friday afternoon, taking her to see Beauty and the Beast in 3D! IT WAS AMAZING- We loved it! Since this is one of my personal all-time favorite Disney movies, you know I was in Heaven! A couple of times we found ourselves reaching out to touch things and ducking as they flew toward us. We are REALLY looking forward to Finding Nemo in 3D in September!

Circus

I suppose we think we know everything because we have one child and we call ourselves "experienced." Not really. We are learning that just because you have one and supposedly know how the story goes, it doesn't always go the same way the second time around. Circus with kids.... Round #2. Round #1 was when Mackenzie was 3 years old. I got a great Groupon deal on a family 4-pack of tickets, so we went Friday night (I LOVE Groupon! I use them a lot and get all kinds of good deals from movie tickets and rentals to free meals to circus tickets, etc. See my link below to check it out!). While Mackenzie enjoyed it, Jax just could not sit still. The combination of his allergies, a 2.5 hour circus and the fact that we were running past his bed time just pushed him over the edge. At intermission (9:15 p.m.), we left and "pretended" the circus was over. Thank goodness Mackenzie didn't know the difference. She had spent her $20 wisely- face painting, cotton candy, an elephant ride and a slushie from Sonic afterward. I had prepared her all week for the fact that she had only $20 to spend, and she could spend it any way she chose. Once it was spent though, NO COMPLAINING. She held up her end of the bargain pretty well.

Now, my thoughts on "circuses." I certainly have my opinion on how I feel about circuses in general. I feel a little better about Shriner's versus Ringling Brothers. Not much. As an anthropologist and a lover of all animals, going to the circus is a tough pill to swallow. Always has been for me, even as a little girl. I like the idea of a circus, just without the animals. That being said, I am guilty of buying into what I despise because of my children. I don't want them to miss out on the experience and the "non-animal" parts of the circus because of my own beliefs. I would like for them to be exposed and make that decision for themselves. As an animal lover, the reality of what life is like for the animals is just sad. I am educated and well read, so it is hard to go and "enjoy" a circus knowing what I know (see the articles below). I feel like it is such a miserable existence for all of the animals. My affinity for elephants makes me even more sad. As Mackenzie rode one last night, I was able to stand right next to it and look into its eyes. I just knew. Oh, how I cried inside.

Book Review: 11/22/63

11/22/63 By Stephen King.
What an amazing book! While fiction, this was one of the most well written, believable and thought provoking books I may have ever read! I learned a lot about history and events from 1958-1963, and my nose was in this book every spare moment I had. It was a novel so powerful, I can still feel the rippling effects, the thoughts and ideas they provoke about the past and the future. It makes you stop and think. It was one of those rare reads that has the potential of really changing and stirring something up deep inside your soul. Time travel is tricky business for an author, and to do it right and make it believeable, WOW.

The book is about a young man named Jake who discovers a portal or "rabbit hole" into the past. It always takes you back to 11:58 a.m., September 9, 1958. When you travel back into time, you are only gone for 2 minutes in 2011. You always return to the same time in 1958 and every visit is essentially a "reset" of any previous visit. Jake travels back into time to save JFK from being assassinated. In trying to "change" the past, Jake realizes the past is obdurate. It resists change. The whole idea of the "Butterfly Effect" is revisited and it is interesting to see how the book portrays 2011, had President Kennedy survived. This book, while emotionally draining, will join Harry Potter on the top of my all time "favorites" list. Sheer literary genius!

Soccer

Well, Mackenzie has chosen soccer again for her next "activity." We have done gymnastics two years and dance one, we did a brief stint of indoor soccer when she was 3 years old, and now she wants the "real soccer." Her first practice and game isn't until March, but since we just couldn't wait (she put her shin guards on over her jeans and traipsed around the house in cleats ALL AFTERNOON), we decided to go to the soccer fields this afternoon to kick the ball around. Daddy worked on some drills with her but she got really frustrated and cried a few times. It was kind of awkward to have her in time out, while Chris played goalie and I tried to score on him, but ok, we did it anyway! Jax just sat in his little car or ran around the fields, so he was a happy camper no matter what. Towards the end of our outing, Brylee came by since they live right around the corner. Those two girls.... trouble just waiting to happen!

"Dear Jesus" and a hot pink lizard

Today at school, Mackenzie witnessed a terrible accident at school with one of the kids in her class. It involved a possibly severed portion of a finger, a door, lots of blood, a fire truck, police car, ambulance and lots of emotional drama. I hate them, but accidents DO happen. Kids will be kids and if we could go back and change all the bad stuff in our lives, then there would never be any bad. I assured Mackenzie that Tristan would be ok, that Dell Children's Hospital is state of the art (oh geez, then I had to explain what that meant... we're in the "why?" stage) and if anything like that ever happened to her, she would be in good hands. Sometimes bad things happen, it's a part of life. When we got home, she made him a card and wrapped up a special gift for him in her Hello Kitty Kleenex (it was not used, don't worry) and put a used Christmas bow on it. My heart melted. The look on her face was just so proud and caring. The best part, what was inside. A rubber hot pink lizard she "bought" last week at Chuck E Cheese with her tickets. She just knows Tristan will love this hot pink lizard, it will make his finger feel all better! Then at dinner, she ended the prayer with, "and one more thing, Dear Jesus, help Tristan's finger feel better."

New Years Day 2012

We celebrated the first day of 2012 in my kind of "style," LAZY! Well, sort of. If you count 5 loads of laundry and a trip to the grocery store as lazy. Just the fact that we had no plans and nowhere to be counted as lazy to me! After lunch, Mackenzie and I went to the park while Jax napped, then came home and scooped him and Daddy up to go back to another park so Daddy could "wet a line." Chris, always a true fisherman at heart. Even if it means dropping a line in a pond for a little perch action. I love that man! Here is how we welcomed the new year.

Wow, what a year 2011 has been! It is a little difficult at the moment to reflect on where we were this time last year. I was battling meningitis, had a spinal fluid leak that would go 2 weeks without being diagnosed, not before I lost all measurable amount of spinal fluid in my skull. In and out of the hospital for emergency blood patches, I honestly thought I would die. My back is incredibly stiff and sore on occasion and I still battle awful headaches now and again. I am not sure I will ever be the same, but who would be??? Before I get all emotional, I want to tell my friends and family that I remember you and your kindness EVERY single day. I cannot hardly talk about the generosity of those around me without becoming teary eyed, even a year later.

2011 was a great year for us, but we struggled as well. Our greatest blessing is 2 healthy children and me recovering in February from a prolonged illness and being able to return to work. 2 other not so memorable moments include 2 children in childcare- OUCH. This will be our only entire year to do this, thank goodness for that. Let's not forget the foundation issues with our home. I look back on these few unmemorables and think, wow, is that it? WE ARE BLESSED.

I turned 34 and Chris turned 36. We celebrated 9 years of marriage.

As we close the book on 2011 and welcome 2012, I want Chris, Mackenzie and Jaxson to know how much I love them and adore them. Here's to continued good health, lots of love, laughter, happiness and lots of beautiful memories. CHEERS!

We Are Baylor!

The smiles on the faces of Art Briles, Robert Griffin III and the rest of the Baylor crew told the story: The Bears came from behind once again to claim their 10th win of the year, defeating Washington, 67-56, in the Valero Alamo Bowl Thursday night.

The win capped off a remarkable year for Baylor football, one that saw the Bears match the program record with 10 wins and, of course, claim the first Heisman in school history. (Not to mention that new stadium on the way.) We’ll look back on all that in more depth in a few days; for now, let’s enjoy this win.

This game was fun to watch not only for Bear fans, but for most any fan of college football — a true shootout. The Bears and Huskies set FBS bowl records for most combined points and yards. BU matched the FBS-bowl record for points and set an FBS-bowl record with 777 yards of total offense (also a Baylor single-game record). The Bears’ 18-point comeback was the third-largest second-half comeback in program history and gave the program its first bowl win since 1992.

This was the final game at Baylor for seniors like Ganaway and receiver Kendall Wright (91 yards receiving and one TD, plus 28 yards rushing), and could be the last for RG3 if he decides to go pro (experts have him pegged as a top-10 pick). If so, what a way to go out; you could see Griffin just taking it all in post-game amidst the pyrotechnics, balloons and confetti, knowing that his team had just completed perhaps the best season in program history.

The insanity continues..... while Aunt Stacy and Uncle Charles went to the Baylor Bowl Game tonight, my parents kept Cade & Caelin. Kenny Bug and I met them at Chuck E Cheese to have dinner and play the kids to sleep. Literally. I chickened out and left Jax at home with Chris as I refused to be outnumbered (adults to kids). I am good, but not that good. I am old and can't run as well as I used to:) Anyway, it was crazy, insane FUN! I actually found myself jogging on several occasions. My ballet flats and cute bra weren't cuttin' it. I should have dressed in my workout gear. Oh, well. SIGH. I loved every moment and laughed until I cried, especially when Cade ran up to the table of women behind us and did this loud roaring/growling/mean face thingy. I died when one of the women roared back! Fun times!

Well, I'm not so stoked about the whole 33 to 34 thing. Naw, not so much. However, I had a wonderful day! I am off work this week, I got to spend the day with my babies, and my Sis and her family came back into town to visit and go to dinner. We braved the whole 6 adults and 4 children in a restaurant thing. I don't need to go down that path again, except to say, I thought we had them outnumbered! Dang! Anyway, it was a nice dinner with yogurt afterward. I got some wonderful gifts to pamper myself with, and I thank my sweet parents and in-laws for making my day extra special. Thank you all for thinking of me, as well as my friends who sent e-mails, texts and left me messages. I love you all. My children and my hubby know I'm going shopping on Saturday with my MIL, so they thoughtfully purchased me some gift cards for my BD. Mackenzie even picked out a "bath bomb" for me that I used tonight. Does this little diva know her Mommy or what?! Just kissing their faces all day was all I really even needed.

For some WEIRD reason (ahem, 4 kids under 5 years), I felt like I was trying to take pictures in the middle of a tornado this Christmas. Most of mine turned out fuzzy or I missed the good ones, there was just so much going on. With a 5 month old, 1 year old, 2 year old and 5 year old, there was NEVER A DULL MOMENT. Thank goodness for wine. Anyway, we enjoyed our time with my Sis and her family. The best part was getting the kids all together and watching them enjoy the magic of Christmas. Mackenzie said she was disappointed because she prayed for snow and it didn't snow. I think she believes that everything you pray for you get. Sweet girl. Bless my parents for hosting us all. At some point, every person in my family didn't feel well, including Jax who didn't go to sleep until 4:00 a.m. on Christmas morning because he was sick with a terrible cold. The same one he passed to Chris and I that we are currently fighting. I am always sad this time of year, once Christmas is over. I look forward to it all year, it is my favorite holiday! Now it's gone, and I have another 12 months to wait. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

In quiet moments, when I close my eyes and think of my children, I often find myself going to the "every day" moments (versus the posed and professional pictures). As a Mom, what makes me happiest are pictures like these: Jax having fun at the bounce house, Mackenzie performing a dance routine for the family one evening (yes, in a chair) and Lola. Oh, Lola. The sweetest most faithful dog I have ever known. You are so dearly loved, I know the kids show their love quite differently- patting you hard on the head, pulling your ears and trying to ride you around the house. Believe me when I tell you I look forward to sitting in the floor with you each night before I go to bed and loving on you. Thank you for being our best friend. You were with us before we ever added to our family, and I can't imagine life without you. I am sad that you will be turning 8 next year and have so much gray. I love you, Lola.

Nana and Papa B gave the kids these 2 books for Christmas. I really think Nancy Tillman is on of my favorite Children's authors. Her sweet, sweet books and illustrations are so beautiful. I cried when I read these two and of course, both of the kids have "On The Night You Were Born." I cry every time I read it. But then, it doesn't take much for my overly sensitive self to cry. Speaking of Children's books, we read "The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye" last night. Mackenzie picked that book out at the library, I am sure because it had a kitty on the front. I just KNEW what it was about and dreaded reading it, but her book choices are hers, I want to always keep it that way to foster her love for reading. So, we read it last night. And guess what? I balled my eyes out. Dang- it went on and on about a cat, how it said goodbye to all its friends and then went and curled up under a rose bush to die. A GREAT book for explaining the loss of a pet, we're just not there. Yet. Sob.

Today we celebrated our Christmas with Nana and Papa B, Uncle Chase, Uncle Colton & Great Grandma Brown. We drove to Waco and took Grandma to lunch, opened gifts and visited. We then drove back to our house and did our gift exhange- WHAT A FUN AGE FOR KIDS AT CHRISTMAS!!! Mackenzie got a "baby Rapunzel" and Princess castle/doll house, a fairy Barbie, clothes and gift cards to Sonic, McDonald's and Chuck E Cheese! Jax got a Cozy Coupe car, clothes, his own portable boombox so he can catch a groove ANYWHERE (you know how he loves to dance!), gift cards and a sweet book. Both kids got sweet books from their Nana and Papa. I have decided Nancy Tillman is now one of my favorite Children's authors! Chris and I also got spoiled with our annual Christmas ornaments, money, shoes, a filet knife and lots of stocking stuffers and other goodies. Nana and Papa were way too good to us this year! It was fun celebrating with our family- it's hard to believe Christmas is only a week away!

Can you believe this?! In his letter, Noel mentioned he has a best friend who may come to visit the kids if he needed to stay behind at the North Pole to make toys or rest. Her name was Tinsel (originally), but Mackenzie started talking to her this morning and introduced her as "Snowflake." SO, our little girl elf is named Snowflake, NOT Tinsel. Mackenzie was quick to tell me that Tinsel was her North Pole name, and Snowflake was her pretend name here at our house. She was remembering the Elf on a Shelf movie where they have 2 names, too cute! We are thrilled to have Noel's best friend come visit, wonder how mischievious she is?!

Our stockings have been hung and our little family of stockings is finally complete now that we have Jaxson's! Jax's stocking was handmade by Nana P. Nana worked for 6 months on his stocking, hand sewing every single piece and sequin. When you squeeze Santa's bag, it even sings! Nana handmade not only Mackenzie's and Jaxson's stockings, but even mine as well, 33 years ago. I love the tradition and I know the kids will cherish their stockings one day when they are older, just as I have cherished mine. We also have stockings up for Lola and Macy (Macy passed in 2006), our ornament and stocking for Maximus, our first Boxer, both still hang in the dining room, and a very special "Dallas Cowboys" stocking that used to be my Grandma Watts's. I smile every time I glance over to the mantle. I am so happy she now has front row seats to all the Cowboy games!

Last night at the Christmas festival we got a huge bag of kettle corn and it looks like Noel helped us put a big dent in the bag! He was found in the recliner this morning with the remote control, a movie on and eating kettle corn.
WARNING: When hiding your elf, I have learned you have to be very strategic when placing your elf. He is NOT supposed to move all day, and he must be out of reach of little hands and any pets. If you do have to touch him, make sure you do so without the knowledge of your children, because you are not supposed to touch him, as he will lose his magic. They might just cry if they see you touch him. If caught in this unfortunate circumstance, just lie and say it is ok for Mommy/Daddy to touch him (just on his hat).

Thursday night was a "make your own" Christmas candle at our library. For all the things I do well, I have to say I stink as a Mom when it comes to arts and crafts. I do NOT have the gift. AT. All. Mackenzie decided she wanted to make an "Ariel" candle with hair. You see what she got.... it was all I could come up with! They did a letter for Santa at school where they drew pictures of what they wanted. So stinkin' cute. I especially loved the fact that Santa was holding a balloon while in his sleigh!

Tonight we had our bonfire/crafts/hayride/cocoa and cookies/Visit with Santa city celebration. FUN! Jax was not fond of Santa (no surprise there), but he LOVED toddling around and eating his peanut butter cookie. My pictures are not great, but you get the drift. PTL Santa was a little better looking than mall Santa last weekend!

Mackenzie woke up once in the middle of the night and again at 7:30 looking for Noel. She looked for about 15 minutes when I asked her to hand me the milk so I could pour her milk for the cereal. I have NEVER heard this girl squeal so loud. Ever. She started laughing hysterically (while I was cracking up in the pantry trying to hide my face)! The whole family rushed to the fridge to see what she was talking about. Looks like Noel decided to whip up some red "magic milk" last night. He did say he loved milk in his letter! Mackenzie was a bit worried he would get cold today, but after I reminded her he lives in the snow year round, we decided our fridge was more akin to a vacation in the Bahamas for Noel. What a silly little elf!

"Noel" made his debut this evening. We decided to start the "Elf On A Shelf" tradition this year, and I am so excited! I had him all wrapped up with a letter to the kids under the Christmas tree. When they came home from visiting Nana and Papa, they were surpised with all of the lights and decorations and a present under the tree. Mackenzie spotted the gift immediately- I put on my best actress voice and acted SO surprised. I told her there were no gifts there when I left earlier, someone must have come and left it (I missed my calling in Hollywood)! She tore into the gift and was super excited. She even fell for the whole, "you can't touch me, I'm magic" part of Noel's letter. I love this elf already. He is a michievious little elf, and wrote in his letter how he likes bubblegum, donuts and milk and toilet papering Christmas trees (just to name a few things). I will do a short post on Noel and his antics every day, so stay tuned. He even mentioned that he has a best friend named "Tinsel," and if she comes to visit us, tell her hi from him. Noel is in the fridge as we speak (I bet you can't wait to see what he has done)! I think I heard him rustling around under the sink looking for some toilet paper earlier, but he was out of luck, as we are on our last roll of toilet paper in this entire house (guess I better add that to the list tomorrow)!

As of bedtime, I had scored approximately half a dozen "yes ma'am Mommy" and Mackenzie even brushed her teeth extra long because Noel was watching. She hugged him (in the box) and told him goodnight. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ELF FOR ALL YOUNG CHILDREN. I am seriously considering keeping him around year round, maybe just making an appearance once a month or so. LOVE. YOU. NOEL!

It's the most wonderful time of the year

Today, we started our morning with a BIG surprise- breakfast with Santa! At the mall. UGH. I am allowed to be disorganized, but it is a little less tolerable when others are disorganized. Or an event for that matter. If I would have had access to a megaphone, I would have made a call to order, told parents to control their children and formed orderly lines. Oh well. I must also mention I was disappointed in "Santa." He was skinny, had a gray beard and wore black cowboy boots. Now, I am ok with the cowboy boots, being from Texas and all. But skinny? Gray beard? I like my Santas round with white beards. How 'bout ya'll? The most important part is that the kids were thrilled and Santa even came to talk with Mackenzie and Jax one on one.

Today I also decorated the house for Christmas. Although it was a tad bit skimpier than years past, I still had the warm and nostalgic trip down memory lane as I unwrapped each ornament to put on the trees. I chose to just do the trees and skip the breakable table decorations and anything little hands might touch and drag down. The stockings are all hung with the exception of Jaxson's. It is a tradition for Nana P. to hand sew and make both of the kids stockings, a wonderful memory and keepsake. My own stocking was handmade by my Mom just a short 33 years ago. His stocking is finished, it just lacks getting his name monogrammed on. As I do every year, I took some close-ups of the tree and of some of my favorite ornaments from my own childhood. Daddy and Jaxson's tree is fishing and sports themed, and mine and Mackenzie's is a Disney Princess and Hallmark themed tree, with many different collector's lines from Nana B.- There are shoes, tea pots and Susan G. Komen Mother/Daughter ornaments. I just love our girl tree!

* I saw a recipe for Peppermint Nutella hot chocolate on a blog the other day- WHAT?! I have a secret love affair with Nutella and often find myself sneaking into the pantry for a quick scoop with my finger, I mean spoon! This recipe looks positively sinful, like drinking something that floats straights to your thighs. Think I might have to try it.

Today Jax had his 12 month visit with his Pedi and got 4 shots (including his flu booster). He wailed, but not for long. He was chatting up a storm, walking around and had Dr. White in stitches while Daddy beatboxed and Jax danced. I was a tad worried about his growth height wise, he keeps dropping percentiles in height! We were reassured by the Dr. that this was normal, especially with babies as big as he was at birth. Ok, whew! His new nickname: SHORTY.

Weight: 22 lbs. 6 oz. (50th percentile)
Length/Height: 29.5 inches (25th percentile)
Head Circumference: 48.5 cm (95th percentile)

From 9 to 12 months, Jax gained 1 lb. 12 ounces, grew 1.5 inches and head circumference grew 1 cm!

Transitioning to Toddler

This week, they have started transitioning Jax from the infant room into the toddler room. He starts his mornings in the infant room, eats lunch and takes his nap, then they move him into the toddler room. He is having such a difficult time adjusting to this change. He is so attached to Ms. Pam, Ms. Amanda and Ms. Ashley. When the other teacher(s) come to get him in the afternoon, he starts crying and fussing. When I picked him up yesterday, he was by himself in the floor just sitting there, while all the other toddlers just ran around wreaking havoc and making so much noise. All of which Jax is not used to. He was sniffling and sighing and it just about broke my heart. But I held it together. Today, I hid in the corner of the infant room when I got there and cried on Ms. Ashley's shoulder.

The infant room is all my baby has known since he was 3 months old. The safety, security and love of his teachers in the infant room. Poor little guy. For the first time with Jax, I feel helpless, like I can't do anything to help him. This is just something he has to adjust to and get over. He is more ready for this transition than he realizes. He is now eating toddler meals (oh, yes, he eats grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas and sandwiches, with fruits and veggies every day), he gets to socialize, play outside and he gets to do more activities. This is without a doubt what needs to happen, the transition is just especially tough for him. He cries and cries when he sees his old teachers, but I know this will pass. The socialization and play time with children his own age is so important. At dinner tonight, Mackenzie prayed to "please help Jax's crying at school." Chris just had to pipe in, "and please help Mommy's crying too." When it comes to my children, I most definitely wear my heart on my sleeve.

Note: Ms. Amanda could not make it to Jax's BD party, but she bought him a present and gave it to me today (this sweet book and an outfit). I might just have to take all of my favorite books for the kids one day and photograph them for the blog in the event we one day misplace some of our cherished books (and inscriptions)!

Thankful

This Thanksgiving was a very special one. We met Chris's family in Port O'Connor at our favorite rental home we always stay at. It is a two story house RIGHT ON the intercoastal canal with our own boat slip. We can fish right off the back decks and we get to watch all the barges and ships go through the canal. My favorite is watching the sunrise over the water in the mornings and watching the dolphins play late at night in the dock lights. Whenever you get the urge, you can just pick up a pole and cast a line. There's always bait available and always a pole rigged up and ready to go.

Day 1- Our boat wouldn't start. This was late Wednesday after our repair shop closed (yes, we even have our own good friends at the local repair shop that know our boat quite well. While it's usually little stuff, it gets repaired about once or twice a year. Welcome to owning a boat, a 10 year old one at that.) Since we couldn't get it fixed until the Friday after Thanksgiving, we just lounged, ate, fished off the docks and jetties and ate some more.

Day 2- Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for. Family, our health (this is an esecially important one for me since I started this year so very sick), healthy children, and all of the blessings and happiness we could ever want. While life is sometimes tough and you can easily get caught up in the "why me?" syndrome, it is so important to see and feel what's truly important. Family, health and friends. God is so good!

Day 3- Time to fish! While the bull reds seemed to have already run out deep in the ocean, there was still some good fishing to be had in the bay. We caught some slot reds and Papa B tagged a 30 inch red fish that we took to the restaurant and had fried up for dinner. OH YUMMY!We also caught several Sheepshead and whiting, only one keeper Sheepshead since they must be at least 14". That was mine- he was a fun catch!

Day 4- Mackenzie, Papa, Chris and I headed out for some early morning fishing. It was great until we got caught up in a rainstorm. While we all fished, Mackenzie lined up the sardines and shrimp on the front of the boat and played "school." What a riot! She was not patient enough to hold a pole- she would rather just help us reel in the fish and then she was scared of them. Daddy will have to work on her! The rainstorm was BAD and we made it back in just in time for hot enchilada casserole. Again, a very yummy meal! Nana B worked so incredibly hard making all of our meals and fixings ahead of time. We had no cooking to do the entire weekend, just heating food. It was such a blessing and we are so appreciative of all of her hard work and efforts- Thank you Nana! We came home and everyone was just exhausted. In bed by 10:30, everything done except laundry (which I am still doing)!

Oh, yes. It's official. I HAVE LOST MY MIND. But so has my Sister and 2 cousins! We are walking next November 2-4, 2012, in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day event in Dallas/Ft. Worth. This will be my FOURTH year... as you all know, a cause very near and dear to my heart. After over 2,000 training miles logged, 180 official event miles and 50K in fundraising by Team Rack Starz, I am at it again! After a 2 year hiatus, I miss this event! I miss training, I miss being on the front lines fighting this devatating disease, I miss being a part of something so BIG. I am not so sure I miss losing multiple toenails and getting awful blisters, but then, who needs toenails anyway? Blisters... WHATEVER. My favorite saying from the 3 Day, "Blisters never killed anyone. Breast cancer does." That being said, get ready for a great year, it's gonna be one heck of a ride. I'm back in this BABY!

Happy 1st Birthday Jaxson! A year ago at this very moment I was working hard to bring you into this world. Ironically, I woke up at 2:00 a.m. this morning, the exact time last year I got up to use the restroom and my water broke. Little did I know how fast this year would fly by, and that I would be taking you to school on your 1st BD, so that I could sing "Happy Birthday" to you. Today is the first day of my new job at work, and I asked my new supervisor when I accepted the position if I could come in late on my first day so that I could be with you at 9:09 a.m. You mean the world to me! I have enjoyed watching you grow this past year- Happy Birthday!

Here is what you are doing:

You can walk, but prefer not to if people will hold you. You love attention and you love to be held.

You love to eat. You are not a picky eater and will eat just about anything. Your favorite food right now is chicken and stars Gerber Graduates and pasta pick-ups.

You are drinking lactose free whole milk, no more formula! You made the transition very smoothly. While you drink via a sippy cup, you love straws, so Mommy needs to go and buy you the cups with straws.

You love your forward facing car seat, and you especially like when I roll down your window. You close your eyes and let the wind blow in your face. Be still my heart, you are so precious when you do this Jaxson.

Your favorite "lovey" is your blue elephant blanket with silkies. You take him everywhere.

You are saying more words these days... "Uh-oh, Ola (Lola) and Da-daa" are your favorites, and we can sometimes get you to say "Ma-ma and Issy (Sissy)." You now reach for people and point to them when you want to be held or get their attention. Your "stranger anxiety" phase is also starting to wane.

You wear Size 12-18 month clothing, and are in a Size 3 or 4 diaper.

You have been working hard to cut your molars these past few weeks. Bless your tiny heart! You now have 2 of them on the bottom, one on each side. Your top molars have broken the skin and are almost completely erupted. That's 12 teeth now! WOW!

Jaxson's 1st Birthday Party

Today we celebrated Jaxson's 1st Birthday at Kiddie Acres, a tradition with both the kids for their 1st BD. Although he was a grump bucket for awhile (can you blame the poor guy, he is cutting 4 molars at once!), he quit crying after the cake fiasco and livened up to open presents. This boy is a DADDY'S BOY! Neither one of my kids liked the smash cake idea for their 1st BD. Jax did NOT like cake in his face. He only likes when you feed him the cake and put it in his mouth. Can you blame him?! Mommy did more to smash his cake up than Jax did- I dropped the darn thing in a hurry on our way to the party!

We had lots of family and friends there and the weather was perfect! It was overcast and windy and made for a perfect day at the amusement park. Each kid received 10 tickets, enough to ride every ride at least once: pony ride, cars, boats, airplanes, ferris wheel, train and carousel. We had popcorn and boxes of candy as party favors and had a BLAST! Thanks to everyone for coming and thinking of our little man. I can hardly fathom that tomorrow morning at 9:09 a.m. he will turn 1!

Remembered: The Alzheimer's Project

For anyone that has ever witnessed the decline of a loved one due to this disease, fair warning, grab a tissue now. What a moving project, the pictures and symbolism are incredible. It is amazing when you look at an "older" person, how often times you do not see (or might never see) the younger "them." This will change the way you "see" life- maybe for just today, maybe a week, maybe forever. It changed me. It reminded me that "memories may fade, but the beauty of a life well-lived never dims."

In memory of my Grandma Parks, oh how I love and miss you. I would give anything to hear you say, "I love you too hon," just one more time. I see you in my dreams and are reminded you are whole and well again, but sometimes it is just not enough. Forgive me for my selfishness, but I desperately wish you were still here.

My beautiful niece Caelin was admitted to the hospital last night for what the Dr. thinks is RSV. She is having difficulty breathing regularly without oxygen, so they will be keeping her another day for observation. She is eating well and resting, her breathing is just still very wheezy and erratic. She is 4 months old. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers!
UPDATE:Caelin got discharged from the hospital late Tuesday afternoon after 2 days in the hospital. Her diagnosis is RSV and she has to continue breathing treatments for awhile. She is doing amazingly well!

First Sleepover

Mackenzie had her first sleepover last night with her friend Bailey from school. Mackenzie's friend Brylee spent the night with us when Mackenzie was 3 and she was 5, but there haven't been any sleepovers since. Let's just say, I was all torn up and worried last night that she would miss me. I was sad that she was "growing up." Well, she wasn't. I dropped her off yesterday afternoon for what was supposed to be a playdate, and thanks a lot for warning me Moms, I got ambushed on the spot with the "spend the night plan and plea." So, I suggested I come back around 7:30 to bring Mackenzie's allergy medicine and pajamas, and that would be an opportunity for Mackenzie to come home if she wanted to. Uhhh, NO. I tried to kiss her and she rolled her eyes and said, "Mom, I'll give you a kiss tomorrow morning when you come to pick me up!" Alllllrighty then. After a spaghetti dinner, ice cream cones, bubble bath and a late night movie (Cars 2), the girls woke up and had pancakes for breakfast. They played dress-up, house, chased each other around the house and slept together on Bailey's top bunk. It was so much fun, Mackenzie informed me she wanted to live with Bailey. I told her Daddy, Bubba (I can't believe we call him that, but we do) and I would be so sad. She said, "that's all right, ya'll can come visit me."

I have been awful about not taking a lot of pictures recently, so I went armed with my camera when I went to pick Mackenzie up at lunch. As you see, no pictures. A temper tantrum ensued and you would have thought I was taking my Daughter back to a snake pit (home). She screamed and cried, yelling at me that she didn't want to go home. Bless her heart, she was exhausted. I take it as a good sign- she had a great time! I always said I wanted to be a "Cool Mom," but it is hard to do sometimes. Letting go, even if it is just for her to go spend the night in someone else's home, was hard for me to do. Just her presence and tiny spirit in our home is what makes my home HOME to me. I missed her, but I'm happy she had such a fun time!

Walking!

At 11 months and 2 weeks old, Jaxson is officially walking! He took 5 steps this evening at 6:10 p.m., in front of Mommy, Daddy & Sissy. He was sooooo excited and proud of himself! He can stand up and balance, and while he hasn't quite "taken off," he is definitely walking and taking several steps at a time!

A new job

With super enthusiasm and great expectations, I have taken another position within our agency at work. It will be in a different unit with LOTS of opportunity to learn many new things, including policy development. I am super excited and just blessed to work with people I think are truly the greatest in the world. Other than being a SAHM, my unit is the only other place I would rather work! I have loved my job and while it is bittersweet, it is what is best for me and my family. I won't be traveling, which is a huge plus. The greatest thing about it all is the love and support I have received from everyone I work with currently. They are truly an amazing group of people. I am blessed beyond what I ever imagined possible!

We started our morning at 5:00 am to get Mackenzie's princess hair done for school and get all the treat bags and snacks packed for the day. We went to "trunk-or-treat" at church and then visited a few neighbors. Done by 8:00 and now it's time for me to go dig through the chocolate to see what "treat" I want with my wine and bath tonight!

Whole Milk

I just wanted to document that TODAY was the last day of formula (this morning) and the FIRST day of lactose free whole milk (this afternoon). It is I will admit, bittersweet. Jax only drinks from a bottle every now and then, mostly from a sippy cup. I snuck in his room the other night to give him a bottle. It was already washed and put away. I just couldn't do it. Not yet. This time last year, he was still a roasting butterball turkey in my tummy. It all seems too soon for me. That sadness put aside, welcome to the world of real milk, hello $120 a month we don't have to spend in formula anymore!

5 Year Stats

Mackenzie had a big day today! It was a day of dentist and Dr. appointments for the whole family. I tend to try and make the most of my days off! We started out with our dentist appointments with our new dentist (Mommy, Daddy & Mackenzie). It doesn't surprise me since Mackenzie is SO SWEET, but at 5 years old, she officially has her first cavity. It is very small and could probably wait to get fixed until our next appointment in 6 months, but we are going to go ahead and have it filled since it is on a molar and she won't be losing those teeth for awhile yet. I am nervous about her having to be sedated, but the dentist said she would get laughing gas, can I get some too?!

We had THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, McDonald's. Yeah, that's right. Pancakes and syrup after finding out she has a cavity, ha! We had fun running errands and making goodie bags for her Halloween party on Monday. We then picked Jax up so we could make Mackenzie's 5 year annual check-up and the WHOLE family got flu shots! Age 4 was the last year for immunizations until she is 11, except for the flu shot (yeah!). Jax was the only one that cried but it was pathetic and fake. The after effects lasted about 5 minutes for Mackenzie. She didn't cry, but she made sure to drag (literally drag) her leg behind her as we walked through the waiting room. She even said out loud, in a very drama queen sort of way, "Oh, that shot in my leg!" Too funny! Silly girl. The best part was when Dr. White started talking to her about eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day- she told him she likes everything except squash and that she eats all her broccoli at school. Then he told her how unhealthy hamburgers and pizza was, and when he metioned they were special foods to be had on special occasions, she ratted me out about eating lots of McDonald's and ice cream. Oh, well. You're only a kid once and she IS in the 25th percentile for weight. I'm not too worried. Kid, you have the rest of your life to worry about weight. If we work hard (we DO eat our 5+ servings of fruits and veggies a day), then we're gonna play hard too (ice cream)!

I am pretty sure it's official now- we are done with triple digit heat, bring on some more of these beautiful days! Lows in the 50's, highs in the 70's and 80's, who can complain?! With fall comes the yummy Starbucks favorites of mine, along with more time outdoors, fall festivals and leaves falling. Can't forget the cool, crisp weather that is so delish. Not too hot, not too cold, definitely my favorite time of the year moving into the holiday season! We enjoyed our time outdoors this weekend and went to a fishing & hunting expo and then a fall festival at the elementary school where Mackenzie will be starting school next year. She was so excited to go to "her school." After church this morning, the kids went with Daddy to see "Uncle" Parker play baseball (Go Longhorns!). I am "free" this whole afternoon, so I finished the Disney photo album on Snapfish and now I'm off to take Lola for a walk and yes, make a Starbucks run! Happy FALL Ya'll!

Walt Disney World 2011

Where do I even begin? There are hardly enough words to express how wonderful and memorable this trip was for Mackenzie, Chris and I. As much as we love Jax, we decided to leave him behind and take Mackenzie for 5 days to WDW to celebrate her 5th BD! I just couldn't see the practicality of toting a 10 month old around a park in a stroller, changing diapers and mixing formula, especially if he would never remember the trip. Although, I must admit, I have NEVER seen more strollers in one place in all my life. Magic Kingdom was our favorite park- it had to be every little Princess's dream come true! I hope this vacation is as memorable to her through the years as I know it will be for us. Oh how I loved living every moment through her eyes and really just being a child again. It was worth every single penny spent, no regrets, with very little we will do differently next time. For us, staying on site was a MUST and the best decision ever because of the free transportation. The meal plan was also a must. We did one park a day, so we were able to see all 4 parks while we were there. The weather was amazing and with so many kids in school, there were hardly any crowds or lines longer than 15-20 minutes. All 352 pictures we took and the 24 videos tell the complete story, but I can't include it all here (I am working diligently on our Snapfish Disney album as we speak)! Enjoy the taste of WDW and the wonderful inspiration of a man who changed the world of animation and made Disney part of each and every one of our childhood memories, Mr. Walt Disney himself!

11 Months Old

Awwww, Jax! You are 11 months old today! It is so hard for me to believe that I am in full swing planning your 1st Birthday party! I am working on the design for your invitations and hope to have them ready to print and get mailed next week. Your BD party theme is going to be a vintage carnival theme, with the colors red and aqua as the primary colors for your invitations and decorations. It will be at Kiddie Acres, where Sissy had her 1st BD party and where your Daddy used to go when he was a little boy. I can't wait to decorate and have popcorn, cotton candy and balloons to go along with ride tickets for your guests- train, pony rides, airplanes, cars, boats, carousel and ferris wheel! You are the definition of pure joy. Having you as a part of our lives, watching you grow and holding your "not so little anymore" baby self reminds me each and every day to count my blessings. We love you so much more than you know!

Here is what you are doing:

Crawling is soon to be a thing of the past. We must be just DAYS away from you walking more than a couple of steps on your own! You take 2 small steps now, but then plop down on your bottom. I can't wait for you to join the upright world!

You love to eat. You are not a picky eater and will eat just about anything. You love graham cracker goldfish and cheese puffs the best. While we were at WDW, your Nanas reported to us that we are not feeding you enough. Apparently, you ate like 5 jars of baby food a day!

You are now using a sippy cup only for your formula. UGH. I snuck a bottle in and rocked you last night. I am struggling so bad with letting the bottle go. For me, it is that last semblance of being an infant, before you become a toddler. I am just not ready. We have one more week of formula left, then we will move you to cow's milk. PTL (Praise the Lord)! There's a car payment in monthly savings right there!

You are big enough and just READY to move to a forward facing car seat. We are about 1 month early, but due to your size, safety and fussiness, we think it is best to go ahead and turn you. Another "infant" goodbye for me. I am not sure I will miss lugging you in the carrier though, that is exhausting!

Well, we are back from our 6 day vacation at Disney World- stay tuned for lots of pictures and slide shows. It was hands down the happiest and most fun we have ever had in our entire lives! Not only was it magical, it was just so rewarding and inspiring to experience life and all of the shows, rides, character experiences, fireworks and parades as a 5 year old child again. I never expected to cry so much this past week from sheer J-O-Y. Chris asked me why I was crying once, and I could only reply, "I'm just so happy." Celebrating Mackenzie's 5th BD in the Magic Kingdom and watching her get dressed up in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and eat with Cinderella and all the princesses in Cinderella's Castle was beyond what I ever dreamed or imagined. I remember looking at Chris that afternoon on Mackenzie's BD, watching her twirl in her Rapunzel princess dress and shoes and said, "Can you believe we made that?!" He just smiled.

On October 13th, 2006, at 4:45 p.m., a tiny 7 lb. 5 oz. and 19 inch bundle of joy entered our lives. Little did Chris and I know, not only was a baby girl born, but two new people as well, a Mommy and a Daddy. Our new titles would redefine our lives, and we would often find ourselves wondering over the years, who were we and what defined us before our children. An addition to our family after several years with no children meant a new marriage would unfold. It may not necessarily have been as full of romance as before, but there is something very magical and true about loving and growing with someone through change. This was the day we went from being a couple to a FAMILY. Four years later, when Jax was born, our family would be complete. That tiny missing piece we could feel was always missing.

Life with you Mackenzie Reese is so full and happy. I love how you are still at that age when you believe everything is right and perfect in the world, you are full of laughter, silliness, energy, love for others and you believe in MAGIC. You give me (us) purpose in life, a reason to live, do good things for others and you make me feel young and carefree again. I love living life experiences through you! If I could bottle your giggle up and save it for later, I would. I love how you laugh and smile, closing your eyes and tipping your head back. I love how you know just when I need a hug, and will gently pat my back when all I needed was a simple touch. You are a fabulous big sister, Jax is the luckiest brother in the whole world. I love to listen and watch you pretend play with your dolls, you teach them many of the same lessons I have taught you- it is sweet and perfect. I love how you still love to snuggle with me and that you are not embarrassed to hug and kiss me. Oh, how I will miss these days one day very soon I am afraid. You love and understand life far beyond your 5 years, you amaze me. You are my best friend in the whole world and I adore you inside and out. Like I tell you every morning, listen to your teacher:), be good to everyone, have a happy heart and remember Jesus loves you. Those 4 simple things (listen to your teacher AND listen to your Parents!) will take you so very far in life.

Roller Skating Party 101

1.) It is LOUD.
2.) It is crowded, especially on a Sunday after the church youth group arrives.
3.) Little children can get easily lost. They are easily found when they roll over your toes with their roller skates.
4.) Cupcake ice cream cones are only to be made the DAY OF. Being proactive and making them the day before is a no go- makes the cone squishy. Kids still seem to love them though.
5.) A megaphone or bullhorn IN ADDITION to a loud whistle around your neck is a good idea.
6.) You can't hear a baby cry it is so dang loud (ahem, Jax!)... or yourself THINK for that matter.
7.) Kids love it! This is the most important thing!

Yesterday was Mackenzie's BD party for family. She had a wonderful time, but 2 hours was just not enough time to fit it all in. We got to see and visit with some wonderful friends we consider family, and I just love the innocence, carelessness and magical"ness" of being almost 5 years old! What a beautiful age, I wish I could stay young and my children little forever. Well, maybe let's get Jax to walking and then we can freeze time!

Tangled and Asymptomatic

Oh, Rapunzel. You are to us what Ariel was this time last year. DA BOMB. No really, do you even know how cool you are?! Just your name, the "R" word, can get Mackenzie to do just about anything these days. LOVE. YOU.

This afternoon we went to see Rapunzel at the Children's Theater, our beloved tradition with Nana B. Since Mackenzie is in love with the movie Tangled, Disney's version of the story of Rapunzel, and since this is her Birthday party theme for next weekend, this was PERFECT timing! Jax was a toot and threw the "I want Mommy only" attitude, so he glued himself to me. All. Day. An hour before we were due to leave the house, the pediatric nurse called me to inform me that Mackenzie's 24 hour strep culture from Friday turned up positive. After the rapid test came back negative and we shared drinks and kissed each other all weekend. Nice. Jax went to the Dr. last Monday and was diagnosed with croup and an ear infection, so he is still on his antibiotic course, which is good. Hopefully he won't get what she has. I told the nurse how baffled I was since Mackenzie hasn't been running a fever and doesn't even act sick, just a "scratchy" throat. That's when we learned she was "asymptomatic" and just a cootie carrier.

On a funny note, Jax has learned how to shake his head "no," and he thinks it is hilarious. So do we! And in the picture with Nana B, is it even possible to get both kids to look and smile at the same time? I think not. The "eye" picture cracks me up! The bulging diaper is also pretty funny. Oh, my!

Birthday parties

Today we spent the afternoon at Soccer Zone for our cousin Kelci's 7th BD party. What a great idea- 3 hours of just "let 'em loose" to play soccer, dodgeball, jump on an inflatable, a kid's dream! We had a great time and I remember the day as if it was yesterday, the day Kelci came into our lives and became a part of our family. She wasn't even 2 years old. We adore this little girl so very much. Our family is BLESSED!

For a sneak peek of Mackenzie's invitation, see below. We were going to have a family only gathering since we are going to Disney World, but our small family gathering morphed into, "Can so-and-so come pleeeeeeaseeeee?" Now there are enough friends to have a party somewhere. And guess what? NOT my house. We learned this from my Sister hosting Cade's 2nd BD at her house. Ummmm, no thank you. So, Mackenzie decided on a skating party. She and I went shopping Friday to pick out her invitations. She picked the theme "Tangled," with princess/tea cup invitations. She really wanted the teacups, because, "Mom, they make me think of riding the teacups at Disney World." So, teacups they were. These invitations are adorable, and I used stickers and writing to personalize them. How cute are these?! I thought they would be perfect in a few years for an actual tea party themed Birthday, but you gotta live in the moment, so here we go with Tangled/Rapunzel and tea cups. I won't ruin the surprise, but I got my party favor idea from the party we went to today. You will die when you see this- the easiest, most practical, VERY cool idea that is great for ALL ages, BOYS AND GIRLS!!!

10 Months

Today you are 10 months old (even though I am a day late posting this)! It is so hard for me to believe I am actually starting to plan for your 1st BD party and look for invitations. Jax, you have made each of our lives so much fuller and richer. Daddy, Sissy and myself, none of us can hardly imagine life without you. Not a single moment of my day passes without happy thoughts of you. No matter where I am at working or what I am doing, you are always with me. I wish you could understand how much we really love you. God knew JUST what he was doing when he gave me (us) you!

I think Dr. White is right. 2 weeks ago at your Dr. appt., he guesstimated you would be walking in 4-6 weeks. That means 2-4 weeks from NOW. I think that is a pretty good guess myself. I am so excited for you Jax! The world is a great big place and there is LOTS to explore. I know you will enjoy being bipedal like the rest of us!

Remember the ticket I received back in June for "passing an authorized emergency vehicle?" Well, I pled "not guilty" and thus started a long drawn out process that finally ended today. July 27th, on my anniversary, I took off of work and drove to Brenham, TX, an hour and a half away. I stuck to my moral guns and stated absolutely, NO WAY was I going to back down from fighting this ticket. The city Prosecutor showed me the video of the traffic stop prior to mine, where I passed in the lane adjacent to where the Officer had someone else pulled over. I slowed to 20 mph BELOW the posted speed limit of 50, which is what Texas Transportation Code 545.157 says I must. The Officer said it felt like I was going fast. With his back to traffic an obviously no radar, how exactly do you prove how fast I was going?

July 27th, I chose to move forward with a jury trial. I knew I was not guilty and that the ticket was unfair, and I felt confident that a jury of my peers would side with me. Today was my jury trial. Mom, Dad and my Sis Stacy (she drove from Tomball to Brenham), came with me and were such a big support. In a very intimidating situation where I felt everyone was against me, it was nice to see their smiling faces in the courtroom. The Prosecutor was very kind to me, explained the process for jury selection, making my opening and closing statements and my cross examination of the Officer. The jury was outside and waiting and we were all ready to go at 9:00 a.m. However, the judge had business at the jail and was 30 minutes late to trial. We began the proceedings and the judge asked if there were any motions. The Prosecutor stood up and made a motion to dismiss my case based on the fact that the state holds a defendant to a 15 minute grace period in appearing for court, and that in order for me to be treated fairly and impartially, the state should hold themselves to the same standard. Basically, the judge was 30 minutes late, so my entire case was dismissed.

That's it, folks. My case was dismissed. I still feel confident that with the Officer's back to traffic and NO radar reading that I could easily have convinced the jury of reasonable doubt, but that is neither here nor there. Afterward, just the four of us (Dad, Mom, Sis and I) went to eat at a quaint tea room in Brenham, with delicious homemade quiche and pie. It was a very special time in its own way- it has been a LONG time since just the four of us enjoyed the day together. Now with families and children, it seemed those days were long gone. I enjoyed my time with them and feel so loved and supported. They gave me the confidence I needed this morning and after all, Mom and Dad are THE reason I am the woman of principle I am.

Crawling and Bath (not so fun for Jax) Time

We had a relaxing weekend around here. Not a lot going on except for play time at the park and a swim/cookout/monster bubble bath. Jax is now crawling everywhere on all fours, he finally popped up from the army crawl. He thinks he is hilarious and when he crawls, he just giggles and giggles. That toot is FAST!

On September 2, 2011, just a few weeks after being featured as a Top Ten Candidate in a local music contest (Kase 101’s “Sing For Swift”) on August 18, 2011, Chris's cousin Kaitlynn suffered a massive brain hemorrhage, what the doctors later determined to be a Arteriovenous malformation - cerebral (AVM). This is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain that usually forms before birth. In some cases, a capillary may burst, causing bleeding in the brain and extreme pressure. For Kaitlynn, she has never been ill or had any indication prior to this happening that there was ever anything wrong in her brain. Kaitlynn was transported to Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, TX, where she was stabilized, and a hole was drilled through her skull into her brain where a shunt was inserted to relieve the pressure and assist in draining the excess fluid. She is currently in a medically induced coma to stabilize her so that doctors can begin to assess her condition. She is 12 years old, and 9 years ago, this precious young woman walked down the aisle with me as one of the flower girls in our wedding.

As of today, September 9, 2011, she is still in a coma and is preparing for brain surgery to go in and attempt to repair the bleed on September 13th. Please keep Kaitlynn and our family in your prayers!

Texas Wildfires

Our hearts are incredibly heavy. Texas is so dry, we are just one gigantic tinderbox. Two dear friends at work and many others I know have lost their homes and EVERYTHING THEY OWN in the massive wildfire in Bastrop, TX. I cannot imagine. Today was a very somber day at work, and I spent the day imagining what it would be like to evacuate our house and come back to NOTHING but smoldering ashes. Last night Chris and I made a "15 minute evacuation plan," and of course, discussed what we would do if given no time. Who would take who in what vehicle. To think of all the memories that would be left behind.

2 days later, as of Tuesday evening, the wildfire is now 26 miles long and 20 miles wide. 550+ homes are gone, and the fire is 0% contained. It has ravaged and destroyed 34,000 acres. Bastrop State Park is right at 6,000 acres. All but 100 acres have been destroyed.

That being said, there is something amazing and wonderful about the great state of Texas. Our hearts are as big as the state we live in. There are firefighters from all over Texas reporting in for duty to fight this terrible fire. In Texas, a natural disaster such as this is considered a regional effort, and the outpouring of generosity and resources is truly indicative of who we are and what we stand for. God Bless Texas and those families who have suffered losses you and I can't begin to imagine.

This morning was GLORIOUS! I stepped outside to let Lola out and the breeze combined with the 72 degree temperature had the entire family in the backyard playing at 8:00 a.m.! After all of the triple digit UNRELENTLESS HEAT, this was like stepping into another world. Can you believe that the high today is only supposed to be 91?! That's 20 degrees cooler than what we've been used to lately. It is 84 now at 3:00 p.m. This is incredible! We took the kids to Subway for lunch, then headed to an amazing park with a 3 story playscape. We spent 2 hours there and had a blast. I can't remember the last time I ran around, climbing on everything and sliding down slides. Mackenzie and I played "tag" and it was so fun. I quickly realized how out of shape I was. Mackenzie and I were really looking forward to our blue coconut snowcones at our local stand, but it was closed, so we settled for Sonic. We are thankful for such a beautiful day and for the family time we got to share together. I know you were looking forward to the pictures of me climbing the rock wall, but I quickly deleted them. They made my butt look big. Happy Labor Day!

BAYLOR vs. TCU

Eat that TCU- That little whoopin' was for last year (still stings). Hope ours stings for awhile (I am really a good sport, promise). Ahhhh, college football! Anyway, we left Jax at home yesterday and Chris, Mackenzie and I met my Sister and her family at the game in Waco. As you know, my Brother-in-law Charles played for BU back in our college days. Not that long ago:) So, he has the hook-up and we got to schmooze in style with free dinner, half-time drinks and snacks and an air conditioned lounge with big screens to watch the game. MUCH easier with kids. We lasted only a quarter outside in the stands and Mackenzie's pom-poms were about to drive several of us nuts, so we headed in to chill in the Lettermen's Lounge. Not before I looked across to the student sections and noticed the sea of purple (TCU) and gold (Baylor). Looked like LSU over there! My Sis entered the Crowd Cameo photo contest with a picture of Caelin and Charles and they WON, so they were recognized before the game on the football field- we had a BLAST!

9 month Dr. visit

Ta-Da!!! The big news of the day, NO SHOTS! Jax had a great visit with Dr. White. Except for crying the whole time due to stranger anxiety. Poor little guy! He is tracking right on schedule and has moved down to the 50th percentile from 85th and 75th at 3 and 6 months. He slowed down on his growth quite a bit these last 3 months, due mostly to his increased crawling, walking around furniture and pulling himself up. In fact, Dr. White thinks we are 4-6 weeks from walking. EXCUSE ME?! I am still in shock. We are so blessed to have such a healthy little man, everything looked perfect!

Weight: 20 lbs. 9 oz. (50th percentile)
Length/Height: 28 inches (50th percentile)
Head Circumference: 47.5 cm (95th percentile)

From 6 to 9 months, Jax gained 2 lbs, grew .5 inches and head circumference grew 1.5 cm!

What are we going to do with you? You are a Daddy's boy through and through. If Daddy isn't around, you'll settle for Mommy. Other than that, give it up people. Nanas and Papas, that means you too- Jax is just not interested in being held or cuddled by anyone else at the moment. You love your Daddy and Mommy, and when we're around, you are attached like a barnacle. A tad bit exhausting if I must say so myself! You are INDEPENDENT as all get out, and when you want to explore and walk around the furniture, by golly we better let you do it! You still like to bite when we hold you, and when you're scolded and told "no bite," you get so upset and cry. So very pathetic Jax man. Your smile when we say "cheese" is the best! You can flash all 8 teeth at once and it is hilarious. You are so very handsome, curious, serious and we love you to pieces!

Here is what you are doing:

You still army crawl everywhere as your primary method of getting around, but you have also figured out how to walk around the coffee table and furniture, and you can pull up on just about anything anywhere.

You love to eat. You are eating Stage 3 foods, mixed grain cereal and puffs. You love mashed potatoes and Mrs. French's homemade macaroni and cheese.

You can now hold your own bottle and you feed yourself every morning. You are at about a 90% success rate in getting multiple puffs stuffed in your mouth all at once, and when you are full, you love to throw them on the floor for Lola. She loves you.

We love you to the moon and back little big guy. I never knew a little boy loved so much by so many. You make my heart so full and happy. I can hardly remember who I was and what in the world I did before I had you and Mackenzie. You two kiddos define who I am, you give me reason and purpose to live and do wonderful things here on Earth. At church today, the lesson was on "Who Am I?" When the pastor asked the question, the very first thought that came to mind was "Mackenzie and Jaxson's Mom." That is who I am.

....Just in time for some big fishin' trips! Welcome to our family, our biggest rod and reel combo yet, an Okuma Solterra reel and an Okuma Cedros rod. At 6 ft. long, with a 50 lb. test (SHE can hold 65-200 lb. test line, yes, it's a SHE), we are so proud! No one more than Chris. Jaxson too! Mackenzie votes we name her Ariel. Any other suggestions?

Cade's 2nd Birthday Party

Our adorable nephew and cousin celebrated his 2nd Birthday with a digger/dump truck themed party. It turned out so cute and was so fun for the kids. I can't believe my Sis pulled this one off with a little one not even 6 weeks old- Helllooooo Super Mom! We had so much fun visiting with the fam, and we especially enjoyed having all the kids together once again. The BIG suprise for Cade at the end of his party was a ride on a REAL backhoe. His Grampee pulled this one off and a friend brought one to the elementary school near their house so the kids to take a ride and work the backhoe. What fun! Between the backhoe and his new robot Alphie, I would say Cade was in heaven yesterday. Happy Birthday Cade-Man. We sure do love you buddy!

Just moved to Texas!

I've finally found my home.

June 14th:
Really heating up.

Got to 100 degrees today. Not a problem.

Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air- conditioned car.

What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this.

I'm turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today.

Lots of cactus and rocks.

What a breeze to maintain.

No more mowing the lawn for me.

Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week.

How do people get used to this kind of heat?

At least it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool.

Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body.

Missed 3 days of work.

What a dumb thing to do.

I learned my lesson though.

Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 25th:
The wind sucks.

It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!!

And it's hot as hell.

The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now.

$225,000 house and I can't even go inside.

Why did I ever come here?

August 1st:
It's 105 degrees.

Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today.

It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85.

I hate this stupid state.

August 3rd:
If another wise guy cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?'

I'm going to strangle him...

By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like ?!?!

August 5th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts,

When I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my butt was on fire.

My skin melted to the seat.

I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and butt.

Now my car smells like burnt hair and fried butt.

Aug 6th:
The weather report might as well be a darn recording.

Hot and sunny...Hot and sunny...Hot and sunny...

And the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.

Doesn't it ever rain in this darn state?

Water rationing has been on the last six weeks.

My $1,700 worth of cactus might just dry up and blow over.

Even the cactus can't live in this heat.

August 8th:
Welcome to HELL!

Temperature got to 110 today. Cacti are dead.

Forgot to crack the window and blew the windshield out of the car.

The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me???

"Hot enough for you today?"

August 10th
My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail.

Freaking Texas...

What kind of a sick demented person would want to live here??

Our weekend

Consisted of playing "school," meeting cousin Caelin for the first time, swimming and just creating mayhem at the grandparents house. My parents are sure getting ornery in their old age (sorry Mom and Dad)! I caught Dad turning his hearing aids OFF several times, as the 4 grandkids, all together for the very first time, all made a very special music of their own. If you're a parent or ever been around rambunctious children, you may be able to close your eyes and actually imagine this... Cade is saying "Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda" over and over, while Mackenzie is playing some guitar that makes music over and over, Jax is being fussy and crying because his Daddy put him down and Caelin, well she's quiet as a mouse, sleeping through it all. Don't forget Baylor running around licking and sniffing all the baby and little kid butts. While Mom and Dad seem THOROUGHLY overwhelmed. This was actually pretty mellow to me, it seemed well, normal. I'm just saying. It was a fun, and as usual, too short weekend!
